Healthcare experts and veterinarians use ketamine as an anaesthetic. Folks use it illegally to get high on occasion. Ketamine is a dissociative drug, – which means it affects chemicals in the brain, having caused visual and auditory distortion as well as a sense of detachment from reality.

Ketamine is generally sold as a white or off-white powder when it is sold illegally. It can also be dissolved in a liquid or made into pills. Ketamine is being evaluated in clinical trials and studies as a therapy for depression. Early indications point to positive outcomes.

Ketamine can be injected, snorted, or swallowed. It’s also smoked with cannabis or tobacco at the event. If injected, the effects of ketamine can be felt in one minute, 5–15 minutes if snorted, and up to 30 minutes if swallowed. Its effects can last for an hour more, but an individual’s coordination or senses can be affected for up to 24 hours after first being used.

  • It is commonly used as an anaesthetic in patients at risk of bronchospasm and respiratory depression at normal doses.

Ketamine is most often used in veterinary medicine. In humans, it can induce and maintain general anesthesia before, during, and after surgery.

For medical purposes, ketamine is either injected into a muscle or given through an intravenous (IV) line.
